Due to an incorrect initial address provided to Rockland 911, Department 11 (Orangeburg Fire Department) was initially dispatched to the incident. Upon arrival, OFD Chief 11-1 identified the correct location and relayed an updated address to Rockland Radio Headquarters.
Department 21 (Tappan Fire Department) was then dispatched. TFD Chiefs 21-1 and 21-2 arrived on the scene and met with a tractor fully involved, with fire extending into the trailer compartment with bilateral fuel cell compromise. The vehicle’s operator had self-extricated before the fire spread.
OFD Engine 11-1750 was first to arrive and deployed two hose lines, one to each side of the vehicle. TFD Engine 21-1502, arriving second, secured a water supply and accessed the trailer from the rear to assess the cargo for flammable or hazardous materials. TFD 21-1500, the third arriving engine & OFD 11-2000 4th due, both assisted with fire suppression.
Once the fire was extinguished, crews continued operations by addressing hot spots and applying Speedy Dry to the affected roadway due to significant diesel fuel, engine oil, and other fluids leaking from the vehicle.
Given the volume of hazardous fluids present, 21-1 requested a dual response from the Rockland County Hazmat Team and the Rockland County Technical Rescue Team. Their expertise ensured the scene was properly evaluated and all hazardous materials were safely mitigated to prevent environmental impact. The Rockland County Task Force teams worked seamlessly to manage the cleanup and containment process.
After more than two hours of on-scene operations, the incident was declared under control at 11:24 AM, and a Signal 11 was transmitted.
We would like to extend our gratitude to Congers Collision Towing & Recovery for their assistance in Speedy Dry application and extensive cleanup efforts following the Signal 11, ensuring no further environmental contamination. |
